Printable Suffocation Warning Labels

Enter the bag size and PrepLabel picks the minimum font size, fits the warning on your labels and makes a print-ready PDF in up to six languages.

Quick answer: Amazon's poly bag guidance asks for a suffocation warning on bags with an opening of 5 in (12.7 cm) or more, measured flat, either printed on the bag or as a label. The minimum text size depends on length + width of the bag: under 29 in → 10 pt, 30-39 in → 14 pt, 40-59 in → 18 pt, 60 in or more → 24 pt. Enter your bag size above and the tool checks the label meets it.

Suffocation warning font size by bag size

Bag length + widthMinimum font sizeExample bag
Under 29 in (about 74 cm)10 pt9 × 12 in → 21 in
30-39 in (about 76-99 cm)14 pt14 × 20 in → 34 in
40-59 in (about 102-150 cm)18 pt18 × 24 in → 42 in
60 in or more (about 152 cm)24 pt24 × 36 in → 60 in

This is the table as seller guides and forum posts quote it from Amazon's poly bag requirements. It jumps from “under 29 in” to “30-39 in”, so PrepLabel uses 14 pt for anything from 29 in up, to stay on the safe side. Check the current poly bag page in Seller Central Help before buying label stock.

What the warning says

The standard English text, as shown in Amazon's sample, is:

WARNING: To avoid danger of suffocation, keep this plastic bag away from babies and children. Do not use this bag in cribs, beds, carriages or play pens. This bag is not a toy.

PrepLabel also includes French, German, Spanish, Italian and Dutch versions for European marketplaces. They're careful translations of the same warning, not official texts, so have a native speaker check them if your marketplace or local law requires specific wording. You can replace the text with your own under Edit the warning text.

Choosing a label size

The required font size is a physical size, so the label has to be big enough to hold the whole warning at that size. These are the text sizes PrepLabel reaches with the standard English warning:

Minimum for your bagSmallest label stock that reaches it (English)
10 pt2-5/8 × 1 in, 30-up Letter (10.4 pt) or 2 × 2 in roll (12.2 pt)
14 pt3 × 2 in roll (15.3 pt) or 4 × 2 in (17.9 pt)
18 pt4 × 3 in roll (21.5 pt) or A4 8-up, 99.1 × 67.7 mm (20.5 pt)
24 pt4 × 6 in roll (31.9 pt) or a full sheet cut to size

More languages need more room: English and French together reach 10 pt on a 4 × 2 in label (11.4 pt) and 14 pt only on 4 × 6 in (20.1 pt), and all six languages reach 10 pt only on a 4 × 6 in label (11.3 pt). The tool shows the size it achieved and turns red if it's below the minimum for your bag.

  • Thermal: 4 × 2, 4 × 3 and 4 × 6 in rolls work on most 4-inch thermal printers.
  • Laser sheets: 10-up Letter (4 × 2 in), 14-up or 8-up A4, or full sheets with Outline each label ticked as a cutting guide.
  • Placement: put the warning where it's easy to see and don't cover the FNSKU barcode.

Bags that already have a printed warning don't need a sticker. Warning labels never carry PrepLabel's name; the small credit appears only in the outer margin of full sheets.
